AN OPEN LETTER FROM UJAAN
"...
Amidst the everyday bustle of our daily lives, our past always beckoned us. Even in this land of dreams, welling up tears caught us unaware – when we found ourselves lost in the thoughts of our far away individuality – our beloved Calcutta. We tried to submerge ourselves through Bengali songs in CDs, Bengali news on TV and of course our very own “adda”.

It was during last Durga Puja. We were waiting to listen to Utpalendu Chowdhury. Suddenly we heard – “Tomakey Chai” – it wasn’t Sumon singing the song; it was one of us. It happened soon after that – we came together bound by the same melody of our nostalgic past. We realized that we love being contemporary, but we can not overlook our past culture. Tagore is in our spirit and Sukumar Ray in our sorrow. We whistle along the way, while we have Sumon and Nachiketa by our sides. Country music brings us happiness, whereas we love folk songs too.

Among all the discussions, we decided that we will inscribe all our feelings in to poems – and the magic of music will bring these poems to life. We will sing these songs ourselves, in America. Hence began our journey against the tide – in the name of “Ujaan”.

Our first album "Mon Ch(n)oya Ek Haoya" was launched on August 15, 2006. All the lyrics and tune of the songs are completely our own. We had the great honor of getting our music arranged and recorded in Calcutta under the direction of Mr. Pratap Roy (Bebida) – who has worked with the Rathi’s and the Maharathi’s of Bangla Gaan for the past 50 years.
